Kona Cafe at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort in Walt Disney World

Kona Cafe at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort in Walt Disney World

We love to splurge a little during our Walt Disney World trips with a nice, big breakfast – something we really don’t do very often at home.

These are my favorite places to enjoy breakfast at Walt Disney World (and take a little break from the character meals).

Grand Floridian Café at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort

Breakfast at the Grand Floridian Café is a must do for us almost every trip – especially if we’re staying at a Magic Kingdom resort, we’ll just head over on the monorail.  It’s usually easy to get in and it’s a nice, comfortable atmosphere.

Our regular menu item here is Eggs Benedict and they offer a simple version of this classic dish.

What’s cool about the Grand Floridian Café is that they serve both breakfast and lunch from 7:30am till 2:00pm.  Want a cheeseburger for breakfast – it’s on the menu.  Want bacon and eggs for lunch – they’ve got that too.

The Wave at Disney’s Contemporary Resort

Located in the lobby of the Contemporary, this is another one that has easy access via the monorail.  It’s a great place to start the day before heading to the Magic Kingdom.

The Wave offers two options for breakfast – an ala carte menu of traditional favorites (and avocado toast!) and a full buffet with lots of choices for the whole family.

I should be correct here; the name of the restaurant is The Wave…of American Flavors.

Kona Café at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort

Are you sensing a trend – my third location is also a Magic Kingdom monorail resort.

Kona Café is longtime favorite and offers a variety of interesting choices along with traditional breakfast items.  If you’re an Eggs Benedict fan like we are, try the Seven Seas Samoan – ‘Poached Eggs with Citrus Hollandaise Sauce on Pulled Pork and Turkey Hash’.

The real star here though is the Tonga Toast – ‘Banana-stuffed French Toast rolled in Cinnamon Sugar and served with a Strawberry Compote’.

You can get Tonga Toast a couple of other places at Walt Disney World, but none of them are like the version at the Kona Café.

Boma – Flavors of Africa at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Boma only offers a buffet, but it’s a good one. The buffet is huge with all sorts of traditional offerings in addition to a few African inspired pastries that are yummy.  The is usually an omelet station as well.

A couple of must does are the Kenyan Press Pot for the coffee drinkers and don’t miss the Tropical Punch (better known as Frunch).

In Your Room

I always tell families with kids to try and make breakfast your quickest meal of the day (unless you have a special breakfast planned) so you can get to the parks early and get lots done.  Every room will have a small refrigerator that you can stock with little breakfast items.  You can always pick up pastries the night before or run down to the quick service spot in the morning pick something up.

Honestly, the room is where we eat breakfast most days.  If we’re staying in a villa there is a full-size refrigerator, a toaster, a microwave, a coffee pot – even a stove and oven.  If we’re driving or using a car service from the airport, we’ll make a stop at the grocery store and get breakfast items for the week.  If a grocery stop isn’t an option, we’ll have groceries delivered.
